We like a bit of continuity here at Switched On, and so, after a few issues with the young hotshots taking centre stage, we went right to the other end of the spectrum and gathered some of the legends of the home-grown game. No shooters allowed.
Watchmen is out now on DVD & Blu-ray and to celebrate this we interview the amazing Marlin Akerman
Silk Spectre II
Silk Spectre II
Q: Hi Malin.
A: Hi. Thanks for having me.

Q: Congratulations on the success of Watchmen. You look fantastic in the movie and soon audiences will be able to see you in the DVD. Can you talk about the training regime you went through before shooting began on Watchmen? You looked amazingly fit on screen.
A: Thanks. It was extremely tough. A couple of months before shooting began I started training with an ex Navy Seal. It was like a boot camp and at the start was quite tortuous, but I then began to get the hang of it and I felt amazing. The training does help you get into character and feel strong. Then a month before we all shipped out to Vancouver to make the movie we all started the fight training and fight choreography and continued to do so throughout the six month shoot.

Q: Silk Spectre II's outfit is pretty amazing too.
A: It was phenomenal. It was like wearing an elastic band over your body for the day, but also adding a corset and adding heels and a wig. It was made from latex so was very tight and my wig would get stuck in the latex. There were plenty of challenges that went with wearing it all day, but I think it served its purpose. It looks amazing and you do feel fierce when you put it on ... well for the first hour anyway (laughs). You can't wait to rip it off.

Q: Why is that?
A: Latex takes on whatever temperature you are working in. We were in Vancouver at night in freezing conditions so the suit would become extremely cold. If we were indoors doing an intense fight scene, it would become extremely hot.

Q: Not only do you get to wear the sexiest, and from the sound of it the most uncomfortable, outfit in Watchmen, but you also find yourself in a strange love triangle.
A: Yeah it is a weird one. One is a blue guy (Dr Manhattan) and the other was a real human being (Nite Owl II). I won't give it away for the people who haven't seen Watchmen yet, but it wasn't really a hard decision for my character.

Q: Dr Manhattan is a naked blue guy with God-like powers. Is he the kind of guy you would go for in real life?
A: (Laughs) Well I do like the colour blue. I'm a big fan of The Blue Man Group in Las Vegas (laughs). But, my character was with Dr Manhattan for 15 years so you can understand if she became a little tired of his molecule talk. She was looking for something a little more real after a while. Dr Manhattan became less and less human over time. I think we all want a relationship with someone with a personality and something tangible so she went on a search and found Dan Dreiberg-Night Owl II.

Q: Dr Manhattan is naked and let's just say he is physically impressive in a certain area. Your character is contemplating leaving him so for her size does not matter.
A: (Laughs) Yes that is true. Size does not matter.

Q: Your character - Laurie Jupiter who has the superhero persona Silk Spectre II - goes through a bit of a transformation in the movie. A: It is interesting. She becomes empowered in her own life. She really finds what her life is which is great because the graphic novel had so much darkness in it.

Q: Were you a fan of the Watchmen graphic novel before you were approached to be in the film?
A: To be honest, no. The first experience I had with the story was when I was given the script. The script in itself was fabulous so I went out straight away and bought the graphic novel. The thing I really loved about the novel was not only was it really cool with superheroes and fighting and other elements that you like to live through vicariously, but it is such an exploration of humanity. It is really a character based and driven film. For me I've done most of my work in comedy so it was an opportunity to play a real character in a genre film. It was a two-in-one. It was the Holy Grail of all comics.
the thing I like about Watchmen is you are exploring the worst of human nature and the most beautiful aspects of human nature
Q: So in decades to come when you look back at your career do you think it will be one of the highlights?
A: Sure. It is so great when you are offered something that really stirs you and drives you to step up to the plate and you have to rise to the occasion. It is rare for a big Hollywood movie to have material that is so complex and challenging and exciting with such beautiful talented people around you. I think what was also lovely is we didn't feel that retrospectively. We felt it in the moment on set when we were creating it.

Q: Watchmen's director Zack Snyder is quite a unique individual. Not only has he proved to be one of Hollywood's great young directors, but he is a guy who seems to inspire his cast and crew with his enthusiasm and energy. He actually admits to being hyperactive. Was that your experience with Zack?
A: Definitely. He is amazing. He is always on this train of thought where he would be thinking 'OK, where do I go next?' But in every moment he is completely present. I remember he was looking at some old vintage photos and as soon as he worked it all out he said 'OK, now I have to go downstairs to the club to shoot the scene with the strippers. Then I'm going over there'. He is so scattered, but he almost needs that to function. He has a fabulous energy. Some people need 100 things to do or they just go blank. I think that's him. His energy is infectious.

Q: With such a long shoot, more than 100 shooting days, I guess you need a leader with endless energy.
A: Oh yeah. We would be entering the 16th hour of a day on set and Zack would just keep going and wouldn't show the slightest sign of being tired. You take his energy and use it for yourself.

Q: Watchmen is quite a dark movie and it does contain violence against women. Were you concerned about that?
A: As a woman I feel in essence it is not glorifying violence. Do women go see horror films? Yes. There is an adrenaline rush and thrill on one end of it. But, the thing I like about Watchmen is you are exploring the worst of human nature and the most beautiful aspects of human nature. At first glance you may see the previews and think it is a movie for guys, but ultimately the storylines are so smart and thought-provoking. It shows what is happening in this world politically. Unfortunately women are being raped. You can't really turn a blind eye to it, but if you are watching the news you will see it is happening. So, as a woman I absolutely would be attracted to seeing this film. Everyone gets something from it because you can associate with at least one or two of the characters or the themes of the film.

Q: So you wouldn't say it is just a guy's film?
A: No. It is a film for both sexes. A human being is going to be attracted to it. It is a really great film. That's what supersedes any labels someone wants to put on it. It's not just an action film. When you see it you quickly realise it is so much bigger than that. It would be wrong to say a woman would not be attracted to it because the film just has so much to say.

Q: The Watchmen fans are hardcore. How did you get prepared to deal with them?
A: I don't think you can ever be prepared. They are just so enthusiastic. You can prepare for a role. If you are pregnant you can read a book. But I don't know how you prepare for the Watchmen fans.

Q: Thanks Malin.
A: Thank you.
